The mission of the William F. Buckley, Jr. Program is to promote intellectual diversity at Yale University. We aim to foster robust and open debate, provide a home for enlightened conservative thought, and expose students to often-unvoiced views. About the Opening

The Director of Development will play a critical role in Buckley Program’s success by implementing its development strategy. Reporting to and working closely with the Executive Director, the Director of Development will plan and direct the Program’s fundraising initiatives, including annual giving, major gifts, events, and planned giving. Duties will span donor research, cultivation, and communications. The Director will build strong relationships with donors via regular interaction, including in-person meetings. Estimated travel: 20%.

The ideal candidate will work from our New Haven, CT office. We will also consider strong candidates based elsewhere who can work virtually and travel to New Haven as needed.


  • Execute and improve development plan, securing financial support from individuals and foundations to meet the goals of the organization

  • Direct and coordinate annual giving program, including solicitations through mail, telephone, and in-person meetings

  • Build strong relationships with donors and increase their engagement with the Buckley Program

  • Grant writing and foundation relations, including timely reporting

  • Conduct donor and prospect research

  • Develop major gifts and planned giving programs

  • Create reports on progress toward fundraising goals

  • Process donations daily

  • Manage gift recognition programs (including gift receipts and thank you notes)

  • Oversee and update development database

  • Draft regular and polished communications to support fundraising initiatives such as fundraising letters, annual reports, newsletters, brochures, and related promotional materials

  • Plan and drive support for the organization’s fundraising events

  • Attend major organization events

  • Other duties as requested


  • 6+ years of experience, including significant fundraising experience

  • Philosophical alignment with and passion for the William F. Buckley, Jr. Program’s mission

  • A bachelor’s degree

  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent organization and attention to detail

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, meet deadlines, multi-task, and follow through

  • Strong work ethic and positive attitude

  • Responsible judgment, honest, and dependable

  • Ability to maintain confidential information

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office

  • Experience with eTapestry or similar donor database a plus

  • Ability to travel roughly 20% of the time
